The department is headed by Dr. Kum Kum Bhardwaj, Ph.D, M.A in English. The holistic development of the first year engineering students is the endeavor of this department. It runs three courses for engineering undergraduates, Professional Communication, Remedial English, and Communication lab.

The syllabus is designed to develop the vocal and written skills of students. Students are encouraged to participate in debates, quiz programme, presentations, role-plays etc. to improve their communication skills. They are trained to write business letters, intra-office memos of various types, lab reports, and proposals etc. Essays on topics of technical interest also from part of the student work routine. In the language lab the students are taught the skillful usage of English in communicating engineering and business ideas clearly and effectively. Apart from academics, the department is special in having classes in communication skills and personality development in the third and fourth years as well. All these classes involve conversation, extempore, role-play and group discussion etc. to provide real-life experience.
